Aerial views of San Francisco Bay and its tidelands from altitudes of 500 to 5000 feet. I grew up in this area, sailed on the bay, and fished its tributaries, taking for granted this great work of nature. For thirteen years I have photographed many facets of the Bay, both to capture its wonder and to expose man’s changes to it.

The High Sierras of Nevada and California offer pristine snow fields in the back country forming amazing shapes with light and shadow. These images are from a series of trips with a large format camera, too much gear, and any friend foolish enough to join me.

The Pacific Ocean holds my soul. I live on its edge, I walk its beaches, swim its waters, and ride its waves (when the surf is good.) I watch it mate with the sky to create masterpieces of serenity and cauldrons of awe-inspiring turbulence.

HOODOO
The Hoodoo River is a magic ribbon flowing to the Bering Sea through the Alaskan Peninsula’s National Wildlife Refuge at the northwestern end of the Aleutian Island chain. Bounded by a towering mountain near its source and an active volcano at its northwestern end, the Hoodoo moves across broad valleys of grasses, sedges, and flowering plants. Running up against its current are extremely large pods of salmon disparate to reach their spawning grounds at the Hoodoo’s headwaters. The weather offered here in September is a mix of cold rain, colder wind, abundant cloud cover and very sparse sun. A wonderfully exciting place to be.

Many nights clouds, sky, and the setting sun come together over the bays and inlets of California to offer up spectacular shows. These photographs come from many seasons and years, before, during, and after storms and cloud drifts.
